Supposedly written for programmers (but not just), this is a manual about creating a happy and fulfilled career and how it must be carefully planned and thoroughly executed.
The author states, that we must be passionate about what we do, and that we must put that passion in our daily tasks, so that we can create an astonishing career, this said, we should be very careful in choosing an industry and market so we’re provided with tips on how to do that and beguine to know our place in the big picture.
Throughout the book there’s this idea that, has professionals, we are our own enterprise, our work and productivity is what we sell, thats what we have to market, that is what we get a paycheck for and just like top athletes practice several hours a day, so should we, if we want to excel.
This is a light reading book, with good tips to whoever wants to build a good career, not necessarily one in software, the author focuses many lessons and episodes from his own life, some are more interesting and insightful than others, most advices are obvious – be a specialist, care about your company, be productive, know to say no, know who’s in charge, etc - but truth is, most professionals don’t think about this stuff, they just go to work stay there for eight hours and go home, so I think that this is a good read to keep things in perspective.
